Real World Connection[]

A hookah, also known as a waterpipe, arghile, or qalyan is a single or multi-stemmed instrument for smoking flavored tobacco called shisha in which the smoke is passed through a water basin before inhalation. Hakim Abu'l-Fath Gilani was a physician in the Iranian Mughal court. He grew concerned about the health of noblemen after smoking tobacco became popular in India. Gilani invented a device which allowed smoke to be passed through water in order to be "purified". He introduced the idea of using a hookah as an alternative to smoking after Akbar I chose to take up the habit of smoking tobacco. It wasn't long after that that noblemen all over India were using hookahs to smoke tobacco and eventually the hookah became a symbol of Indian aristocracy and gentry. Today, you can find hookahs in homes and restaurants around the world!
