Jack the Ripper's Lantern is an artifact first featured in "Nevermore".

Effects[]

Anyone that looks directly into the lantern's beam becomes transfixed, unable to think or move while hypnotized by its glow. If the lantern is suddenly removed, those hypnotized by the light will be killed. However, if the lantern is somehow disarmed, the victims will be left dazed, but unharmed.[1]

The effects can be negated with eye protection.[2]

History[]

Jack the Ripper would presumably use the lantern on his victims so they wouldn't be able to run away, fight back, or call for help as he killed them. It is unknown if he was the lantern's creator, or merely its most famous and prolific user.

In 1889 in London, Warehouse 12 agent H.G. Wells used Harriet Tubman's Thimble to pose as a prostitute to lure the Ripper with the lantern in. When he attempted to use it on her, she protected herself with neutralizing spectacles and revealed her true identity. When he attempted to attack her even without the aid of his lantern, she incapacitated him with her personal Tesla and promptly collected the lantern. Caturanga appeared and congratulated her on such an impressive snag in her first month as an agent after the conclusion of her apprenticeship period.[2]

Around 2009, James MacPherson secretly implanted the Pearl of Wisdom into Leena,[3] allowing him to manipulate her into taking artifacts out of Warehouse 13 without detection and send them to him.[4] The lantern was presumably among them.

In Colorado Springs, Colorado, after Pete Lattimer and Myka Bering saved Myka's father Warren from the effects of Edgar Allan Poe's Quill Pen and Notebook. MacPherson then goes to the Bering home and uses the lantern on Warren and his wife Jeannie as leverage to coerce the agents to giving him both the pen and notebook, revealing he sent the notebook to Warren and that having them do the work of uniting both halves of the bifurcated artifact to neutralize it was his plan all along. After being given the pen and notebook, MacPherson turns the lantern on Myka and Pete, entrancing them long enough to escape by the time they woke up.[1]

After MacPherson's death,[3] the lantern was presumably recollected by Warehouse 13.

Real-World Connection[]

Jack the Ripper, his best known name, was a serial killer in 1888 London. Other names the media gave him were "The Whitechapel Murderer" and "Leather Apron", however the reason Jack the Ripper stuck was because that's how he addressed himself in his "From Hell" letter. Nobody knows exactly how many victims Jack had, 11 separate murders occurred in The Rippers "hunting ground", but at least 5 of them were his work. The "canonical five", as they became called, were all found with deep throat slashes and removal of internal organs which was considered to be Jack's signature kill. Jack sent hundreds of letters to the newspaper and police, many of which were considered hoaxes. Some of the letters Jack sent came with a package containing an organ or body part of one of his victims. In his "From Hell" letter he sent a victims left kidney, claiming he fried and ate the other one. Jack the Ripper was never found and convicted and there are many arguments regarding his murders. There are over 100 books telling about Jack the Ripper and today is considered to be a "children's bogey man."
