Real World Connections[]

Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790) was a major figure in the Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'Harmonica'.

Among his known work is the kite experiment, in which a kite with a pointed conductive wire attached to its apex is flown near thunder clouds to collect static electricity from the air and conduct it down the wet kite string to the ground. The experiment was first proposed in by Franklin in 1752, who reportedly conducted the experiment with the assistance of his son William. The experiment's purpose was to investigate the nature of lightning and electricity, which were not yet understood. Combined with further experiments on the ground, the kite experiment demonstrated that lightning and electricity were the result of the same phenomenon.

A booster was a motor-generator set used for voltage regulation in direct current electrical power circuits. The development of alternating current and solid-state devices has rendered it obsolete. Boosters were made in various different configurations to suit different applications.
